Starting From Collage (Melinda Gibson Research)

Taking inspiration from Melinda Gibson, I completed some collages to begin painting from.

Her artwork uses a blend of photography and collage to create intimate pieces of work, focusing on human interaction, contrast and possibly our relationship with the environment, as imagery of nature and urban spaces are reoccurring motifs in her work. The two opposing spaces are sometimes contrasted and linked together by the human figure, suggesting we are the boundary between the metropolitan and natural world. Manmade imagery and organic imagery are made to appear harmonious across Gibson's work, she selects images, colours and shapes that compliment each other and provide a sense of unity between the contrary spaces.

In this work, buildings lit up at night and a landscape experiencing a misty morning are linked by the embrace of two figures. Gibson uses the human silhouette to show the harmonious connection between nature, domestic life and humanity. To further add to the theme of contrasting spaces being in harmony, she utilises the stark difference in brightness between the dark city and light vista to present how opposing spaces can exist side by side.
